Last December, I repeated the same New Year’s resolution that I had made three years in a row - to lose weight and keep it off. In the past, I had developed a routine of sorts - implement some drastic change to my diet, lose a bit of weight and then gain it all back some time around spring, after months of not eating enough finally erupted into a desire to throw the diet - and my progress - out with last night’s trash.

I also have a family history of obesity, and thought it was my genetic destiny to be overweight my entire life.

And then last year, on advice from a friend, I decided to try Nutrisystem​. This time it was different. Registered dieticians told me exactly what to eat and why, and provided helpful advice and encouragement in those moments when sugar cookies and holiday treats were staring me in the face.

The secret to Nutrisystem​ is the right mix of portion control, balanced nutrition and frequent meals. Making a few tweaks to my diet and lifestyle is all it took to improve my health and start shedding fat.

Here are some of my biggest takeaways - just in time for the New Year - that anyone can incorporate into their diet, whether you’re using a professional plan or going it alone.

1. Eat less, more often

The biggest reason I’ve quit diets in the past? Hunger. The feeling would dictate my mood and energy and I never seemed to be in control of my cravings. So being able to eat less and still feel full throughout the day was a breakthrough I only experienced with Nutrisystem​.

Their meal plan is built around 6 small meals, which can be customized from a menu of around 150 choices (the lunch menu was my favorite). Eating smaller meals throughout the day doesn’t allow your body time to feel those hunger pangs and tricks your metabolism into working overtime - helping you to feel fuller, for longer. 


2. Start your day with something sweet

There are two people in this world - the ones who reach for salty chips and the sweet-toothed cookie lovers. I definitely fall into the latter category and it’s usually my diet downfall. But with Nutrisystem​, I was able to satisfy my sweet tooth- with french toast or pancakes - and I found that by indulging slightly in the morning it quieted my sweet tooth for the rest of the day.

Nutrisystem​ has a lot of sweet options, so if you do crave a 3pm pick me up, you can grab a snack bar or smoothie.

3. Get moving before meals

What you’re eating should be the main focus of any plan to lose weight - you’ll get further by eating right than exercising more. But exercise is still an important part of the equation - you just have to find time to fit it into your day. My old workout routine was never very successful - I was too hungry to work out before meals, and too full to work out after. Now, because I eat six times a day, I can sneak mini workouts into my daily routine, exercising for 10 minutes before every meal. I started with going for walks before meals, or climbing the stairs at work, and now I incorporate short exercise videos (which I find on Youtube) into the mix. The mini intervals make the exercise routine easier to stick with, and there’s extra motivation knowing that in only ten minutes my reward will be something delicious to eat.

4. Find healthier versions of your favorite food

I will never give up pizza! But now, I have to admit to myself that I can’t eat the way I used to and still expect to lose weight. So I’ve found it’s easier to create healthier versions of the kind of comfort food I know I can never give up.

It’s all trial and error. I’m yet to find a healthier version of a donut or bacon that I still enjoy as much, but I have been able to eat a lot of the foods I love, and to me, they satisfy almost as much as the original. My favorites on the Nutristystem​ menu are lasagna and pepperoni pizza melt.

5. Add more greens to feel more full

Along with the food delivered by Nutrisystem​, the program is meant to teach you how to make better food choices. They have a grocery guide filled with food that will fill you up but won’t make you gain weight. Along with their meal planner I’ve been able to create more nutritious meals while also understanding what to eat and what not to eat.
