One element of using meal-delivery services that concerns customers is what happens to all the packaging required to send food cross-country every single week. HelloFresh have thought about this when they create their packaging. They have created the following guidelines for each customer.
Insulating Liners – The honeycomb paperboard is curbside friendly, while the summer lines will need to be taken to a recycling center. Winter liners can go in the trash.
Ice packs – use scissors to empty the water-soluble contents into the trash (not down the sink) and then the plastic pack can be recycled.
HelloFresh box – fold and discard with your regular recyclables
Separator and Meal kits are all 100% curbside friendly too.
We haven’t seen a company which provides so much information about how and where their products and ingredients are sourced from. The website has a whole section highlighting some of the suppliers they are particularly proud to work with, and they also have a lot of information on their FAQ page to highlight the practices they believe in.
The company is committed to buying sustainably sourced seafood which is natural, both wild-caught and farm raised fish are used. They require traceability on both how and where the seafood has been caught which can change between varieties. They work with the Monterey Bay Seafood program ad have sustainability certifications which include MSC (marine stewardship council) and BAP (best aquaculture practices.) Representatives from HelloFresh personally visit each meat supplier to make sure the operation is food-safe, antibiotic and hormone free, as well as ethically treated.
To get started, users simply sign in using Facebook, or by entering their email address and choosing a password. Now each individual will need to choose between the Classic plan, the Veggie plan or the Family plan. While the Classic plan allows the most choice, from 8 delicious recipes each week, the veggie and the family plans are handpicked for you, 3 per week. The Veggie plan is simply meat and fish free, while the Family plan will suit picky eaters and children too.
Choose between 2 and 4 people for the Classic plan, and whether your household would like 3, 4 or 5 meals per week. Shipping is always free. Users will immediately be prompted to enter their delivery address, and will be shown available delivery dates and times. Unlike many other ingredient delivery services, customers can choose the date and time which works for them. Lastly, choose to pay by either credit/debit card, or by PayPal. The plan will auto-renew each week. As a flexible service, your orders can be paused or cancelled at any time with 5-days notice.
HelloFresh works with a qualified team of chefs and dieticians, crafting delicious recipes which are simple to recreate at home. They have a wide variety of meal options, but allow customers to make certain preferences and omissions clear. At the moment, the Classic plan allows for users to be:
Within the Classic plan, users can also choose these preferences:
Fit: Meals which are around 650 kcal per serving, wholesome, nutritionally dense and perfect for those on a weight loss plan.
Quick: The simplest and quickest meals to recreate, all 30 minutes or less.
Variety: Perfect for customers who want to learn how to cook with new ingredients and try something different.
There is also a Vegetarian plan, which has less variety but no meat or fish included. Users can also opt for the Family plan, meals which will suit even picky kids and younger eaters in your home.
All meals can be viewed weeks in advance, and on the classic plan users can choose between 8 each week. With delicious choices from meat, fish, poultry, pasta, salads and seafoods, there’s something for everyone. All the ingredients are sent with simple to follow 6-step recipes, complete with nutritional information, tips for cooking, and every pre-measured ingredient you will need to make the dish. The only exceptions are salt, pepper, sugar, oil and butter.
The recipes come in easy to follow six step guidelines, and are marked by difficulty level to help customers choose what they would like for the coming week.
The pricing is one of the best elements of HelloFresh. It’s extremely transparent and very affordable. As a blanket rule, every serving is $9.99. The only exception here is the Family plan, which comes in at $8.74 per meal. Shipping is always free.
HelloFresh have done the research to be able to confirm that they are 75% cheaper than using the grocery store. The company completed a study to compare their own customers with those who shop at nationwide grocers. They put the price difference down to a variety of factors. Firstly, food is kept seasonal which makes it cheaper to source. Suppliers are used directly and there are no markups. Everything is delivered to your door so transportation costs are zero, and ingredients are pre-portioned so that there is no waste to consider.
If users need any help, there are a few email addresses to use, depending what the issue might be. The manage my account section of the site can help with a lot of troubleshooting, especially when users are first starting out with HelloFresh. There is also a comprehensive FAQ section which really does cover everything a customer might want to know about the service. The categories include:
Managing my Account
Placing and Editing Orders
Membership and Plans
Recipes, Ingredients and Packaging Gift Cards
If users still can’t find the help they need, they are encouraged to phone customer care, or reach out by social media.
The HelloFresh blog is split into four fun sections. The first is aptly called Eat, and while the HelloFresh meal plans only serve main courses intended for dinners, the blog covers everything you could imagine, from breakfasts and lunches, to drinks and snacks. Recipes, ideas and guidelines are all here for users to check out and enjoy.
The Tips and Tricks section of the blog will unlock nutrition ideas, hacks for an easier work/life balance with the right foods on your plate, and has recipes, seasonal and topical articles and food ideas of all kinds. These can vary from Thanksgiving ideas at the right time of year, to healthy eating ideas and information about recipes which are on next week's menu.
The Fresh Life, or Lifestyle section, is recipe ideas which are bound to be crowd pleasers, or kickstart a healthy new routine for your eating habits. We love the smoothie ideas, simple to prepare and great for breakfasts or snacks.
Behind the Scenes is all about the HelloFresh suppliers and partners, telling users more about where and how the food arrives at their doors.
There’s a lot which is unique about the HelloFresh shop. Firstly, they include some must-haves, such as a recipe card binder so that users can keep their recipes to recreate and learn from as they extend their own repertoire. The shop includes sharp knives, oven to tableware, clean-up tools and storage extras, plus eco-friendly elements such as an odor-eliminating compost bin.
The really unique element which we love however, are the Hello Fresh kits. These are ready created collections of utensils or products which suit a particular need, such as a Tiny Tummies Kit for small chefs to get started in the kitchen with the help of mom or dad. HelloFresh have a little cook’s mixing bowl set, and a little cooks kitchen collection, both of which your little culinary sous-chef would be delighted to have.
Other Kits which have caught our eye include,
The Aftermath Kit. Great for clean up and storage, this includes a dish scrubber, storage containers, soap dispenser, and kitchen towels.
The Quick-Fix Kit. Here users can cut down on prep time, with a digital kitchen timer, a garlic press, a citrus squeezer, a potato masher and a food chopper.
The Starter Kit. We love this beginners kit, which includes a zester-grater, a spatula, an olive wood spoon, a multifunction peeler, and some elevated steel tongs.
All products are sold from trusted partners such as Joseph Joseph and Microplane, as well as some HelloFresh originals.
HelloFresh have a variety of options, depending on what you’re looking for. Preferences to choose between include, low-kcal (650 per serving), vegetarian, family friendly and specifically new and exciting ingredients and recipes. All recipes are outlined step by step, and ingredients are locally sourced and delivered weekly for 2 or 4 people. There are no options for desserts or breakfasts, but for flexible main courses, they could save you up to 75% on your grocery bill and make your life a whole lot easier, too.
